How do we produce them?
Timberness boards are produced using co-extrusion – therefore, unlike ordinary composite boards, we call them hybrid boards. The majority of composite boards available on the market are created by extrusion – that is, the entire board is made from the same material. Thanks to co-extrusion it is possible to differentiate ingredients in different parts of the board. Expensive dyes, high-quality wood or refiners are not needed in the core of the board, while its top layer does not need as many stiffening components. Co-extrusion permits the use of the best available ingredients without raising the price of the board, while guaranteeing the uniformity of the board.
What are Timberness boards made of?
Easy – a composite board is made half of plastic and half of wood. It also contains ingredients that increase durability, resistance and give attractive appeal. For the production of Timberness boards, we use top-class polymers – specifically polyvinyl chloride (PVC). The second dominant ingredient is high-quality wood. When choosing composite boards, it is worth checking what kind of plastics are used for their production. Some of the boards available on the market are made of plastics with inferior technical parameters – namely polypropylene (PP) or high-density polyethylene (HDPE). They are cheaper but more susceptible to scratches, wear and mechanical damage. Boards made of PP or HDPE contain a smaller amount of wood – which results in a less attractive look.
What is the difference between a composite board and a wooden board?
A composite board, although deceptively similar to a wooden board, really differs from it. It has greater strength than wood, it is more resistant to moisture and water, but also to moss, fungi and pests. It does not mildew, moulder or rot. In contrast to wood, it does not require complicated care – painting, sanding or impregnation – all you need to do is to wash it with water and ordinary detergent (e.g. dish-washing liquid). It is safer than a wooden board – thanks to the brushing process it has a non-slip surface and no splinters. It is also much more fire resistant than wood.
What certificates do Timberness boards have?
The entire Timberness system is certified by the Building Research Institute. It received a certificate of flammability type B, as well as a positive assessment of performance, i.e. the National Technical Assessment of the ITB. Our products are also approved for use on roofs – as roof terraces. You can see all the certificates granted to Timberness in the Downloads section.
Where can Timberness composite boards be used?
Timberness boards are intended for outdoor use: terraces, balconies, patios, piers, porches, pools and ponds. Thanks to their high durability and resistance, they can be used for commercial applications – in places exposed to heavy wear, such as restaurant terraces, piers, jetties and other public utility places.
Are Timberness boards ecological?
Timberness boards are ecological for several reasons. First, by using a composite, we limit the use of wood, and thus the logging. Secondly, we use recycled materials for production. Thirdly, in the production of the boards – unlike many other manufacturers – we use polyvinyl chloride (PVC) rather than polypropylenes (PP) or polyethylenes (PE) which involve high consumption of fossil fuels and so result in high emissions of pollutants into the air.
What is the difference between the Prime and Select boards?
TimbernessSELECT and TimbernessPRIME boards are made of the same material, but differ in construction and design. The SELECT board is wider than most boards available on the market, providing for an original and modern terrace look. It is also slightly thinner, which facilitates its installation on balconies – it can be installed on tiles. The PRIME board due to the smaller width and greater density of the chambers has supreme durability – it will be suitable in places with heavy wear, i.e. in commercial applications. PRIME is also a double-sided board – each side has a different finish.
What dimensions do Timberness boards have?
The TimbernessSELECT board has a width of 18 cm and a height of 2.5 cm. The TimbernessPRIME board has a width of 14.5 cm and a height of 3 cm. The standard length of each board is 4 meters – however, it is possible to cut both boards down to a shorter length as well as order longer boards, the maximum length being 6.5 meters.
Where can I buy Timberness boards?
Thanks to the extensive distribution network, Timberness boards can be purchased from our representatives in almost every part of Poland and in European Union.
Can I install Timberness boards myself?
Thanks to the solutions we apply, the comprehensive nature of the system and precise instructions, the installation of Timberness boards on a terrace or balcony is not difficult. However, we do recommend hiring professional fitters. It is worth remembering that the guarantee for the Timberness terrace system does not apply if the boards have been installed in a different manner than described in the installation manual. Each of our representatives offers an installation service for an additional charge. Installation instructions can be found in the Downloads section.
Can I order a terrace installation at the Timberness boards purchase points?
Of course – each of our distributors offers an installation service and we encourage you to take advantage of this possibility.
What ground can Timberness boards be installed on?
The optimum terrace ground for Timberness boards is a concrete screed. When installing directly on the ground, it is necessary to use concrete pillars or levelling wedges.
Should the boards be installed parallel or perpendicular to the building?
It is recommended to install the boards perpendicular to the building. This solution has two advantages: first, it makes the terrace look larger, and secondly – it allows you to make a slope, so that rainwater freely drains from the terrace along the grooves in the boards.
Is it necessary to leave gaps between the boards?
Definitely – such gaps are called expansion joints and are (depending on the type of T-Clip used) 5 or 7 mm. They are necessary because they allow the board to “work” – that is, change its volume in response to environmental factors. When installing, it is not necessary to remember to leave the expansion joints, because they are forced by the T-Clips.
What – apart from the elements of the Timberness terrace system – do I have to buy to build a terrace?
The Timberness terrace system is a complete system – that is, it contains all the necessary elements, starting from boards, joists, to finishing strips and screws. The system does not contain the elements needed to prepare the ground for the terrace (i.e. concrete screed, posts, levelling wedges, etc.). The ground preparation is the client’s responsibility.
What is innovative about the Timberness installation system?
In short: better design of the terrace. Thanks to the original solution of fitting the finishing veneer, we avoid screws visible on the terrace edges.
Can the boards be shortened and cut?
Yes – Timberness boards can be easily cut to the required size, this does not affect the characteristics of the board.
My terrace is semi-circular – can I use the Timberness system to build it?
Definitely – Timberness terrace boards can be freely cut without compromising the board's properties. To finish the semi-circular edge of the terrace, you can use a composite strip – which perfectly matches the selected colour of the board. The strip is flexible, so it can be installed on a half-round edge.
Which finishing strip should I use?
The Timberness offer includes two types of finishing strip – composite and Aluminium. The composite strip is made of the same material as the top layer of the board, so it can be perfectly matched to the selected board. It is also flexible, so it also works well with semi-circular edges of the terrace. The aluminium strip is intended for step edges – that's why we recommend using it in the construction of stairs. Thanks to the anodizing process, the Aluminium strip has increased resistance to abrasion. You can learn more about finishing veneer on the Prime and Select product pages in the Accessories section.
Which installation clip should I select – T-Clip or T-Clip Flat?
The choice between T-Clip and T-Clip Flat depends on what joists will be used. The T-Clip is a clip used with low and standard joists. T-Clip Flat is dedicated for Aluminium joists. It can also be used in special situations, when the customer decides to use a wooden joist (outside the Timberness system).
What kind of care do the Timberness boards require?
Composite boards – unlike wood – do not require complex care or impregnation. The only procedure necessary is washing the terrace. The easiest way to do it is to use water and plain detergent (e.g. soap or dish-washing liquid). A high-pressure washer is recommended that will allow all impurities to be removed.
What is seasoning? Why does the board slightly change colour immediately after the installation?
The advantage of Timberness boards is the use of high-quality wood. A natural characteristic of wood fibres is that they react to the sun and rain. Therefore, boards can change their colour during the first four months after installation – this period depends on the degree of exposure to the sun and rainfall. Such stabilization of wood in a composite board is called seasoning. In its first phase, there is a characteristic yellowing which lasts up to one month after the installation. Only after the seasoning is finished do the boards acquire their proper and final colour. Please note that the final colour of the board is slightly lighter than before the installation, and with time it will continue to gently lighten. This is a characteristic feature of all composite boards.
How to remove stains from drinks or food from the terrace?
They should simply be washed – preferably using dish washing liquid that will dissolve fat. We recommend using a high-pressure washer.
How to prepare a terrace made of Timberness boards for winter?
Composite boards – in contrast to wooden boards – do not require any special preparation before the winter season, that means no impregnation or maintenance. You do not have to cover them or remove snow as it will not change the appearance or properties of the terrace.
Can a terrace made of Timberness boards be cleared of snow and sprinkled with salt in winter?
A terrace made of Timberness boards can be cleared of snow, but it is important to do it gently so as to avoid scratching. For this purpose, use a plastic shovel – you mustn't use steel tools. Remove snow from the terrace in line with the grooving, i.e. the grooves in the boards. The terrace can be sprinkled with salt to dissolve snow and ice, but you should not use the so-called road salt (due to chemical additives) – regular rock salt or commonly available calcium chloride will work. We advise against sprinkling the terrace with sand or salt mixed with sand. If possible, it is good to rinse the terrace with water after sprinkling it with salt.
Will chlorinated or salt water harm the composite board?
Salt or chlorinated water does not change the properties or appearance of Timberness boards – that's why they are a great material for coastal terraces, piers or pool edges.
What is the difference between the Timberness terrace system and other composite boards available on the market?
The main differences are the production technology and the method of finishing the terrace. The vast majority of boards available on the market are produced by extrusion, while Timberness boards are produced by co-extrusion, which allows the use of high-quality components, guaranteeing rigidity and durability of the board, as well as its beautiful and unfading colour. You can read more about it in the section Everything about Timberness composite boards >> How do we produce them. The second difference is the innovative system of installation of the finishing veneer. A frequent problem with systems available on the market is the inadequate aesthetics of the finish – the terrace look is spoiled by visible screws. A problem may also be the phenomenon of “shrinking” of the finishing veneer – large temperature fluctuations in other terrace systems may cause fixed finishing veneer to change its shape after some time due to the expansion or contraction of the board. The original Timberness solution has eliminated both of these problems. Strips from the Timberness system are fixed “on a click” – not rigidly. Thanks to this, all fitting elements, including screws, are hidden under the strip, and the strip adapts itself to the changing dimensions of the board. You can read more about it here.
What colours do Timberness boards come in?
In both systems – TimbernessSELECT and TimbernessPRIME – you can choose from four colours: dark brown, light brown, graphite and grey.
Can I order boards with a length of more or less than 4 meters?
Yes – at the client's request, we cut the boards to the desired length. The maximum length of a board is 6.5 metres.
What strip should be used to finish stairs made of Timberness boards?
To finish stairs, it is best to use the Aluminium strip – it will protect the edges of the steps, because it was designed as an angle profile, and its surface has been subjected to the process of anodizing, so it has increased resistance to abrasion.

Do composite boards change colour?
The advantage of Timberness boards is the use of high-quality wood. Natural wood fibres tend to react to the sun and rain. Please note that the final colour of the board is slightly lighter than before the installation, and with time it will continue to gently lighten. This is a characteristic feature of all composite boards.
Do composite boards heat up?
Like any surface exposed to sunlight, composite boards also get heated up – however, tests show that they do not heat up more than wooden boards. One of the reasons is the chamber construction of the boards – which allows ventilation inside the board. Like any other material, dark boards will heat up more than light-coloured ones.
After installing the boards on the terrace, the boards have slightly yellowed – what's happening?
Yellowing of the boards in the first period after installation is a natural phenomenon, a stage of the so-called seasoning – no worries, the terrace will return to the right colour. The advantage of Timberness boards is the use of high-quality wood. Natural wood fibres tend to react to the sun and rain. Therefore, boards can change their colour during the first four months after installation – the length of this period depends on the degree of exposure to the sun and rainfall. Make sure that the terrace boards are evenly seasoned – a good solution is to change the position of the furniture standing on the terrace in the first few months.
Can I walk barefoot on a composite terrace?
Definitely– composite boards, unlike wood, do not have splinters. The process of brushing boards also gives their surface non-slip properties – which prevents falls.
